I am shook. This was a 6 star read for me, hands down the best book I have read in a long time, maybe even ever. I found this while scrolling through TikTok, the author was promoting herself and something about the book pulled me in. This is not my usual read, I can’t even pinpoint the exact genre, it’s a blend of apocalyptic, fantasy, action, and a touch of romance. I’m usually pretty strictly a romance reader, but this book took me for a ride and I loved every single minute of it. I never knew what was going to happen next, literally my only complaint is that it ended with a cliffhanger and the next book isn’t out yet. Other than that it was perfection in my eyes.
This book had me hooked from the very beginning, Amber is a woman who loves to hike, camp, and film photography, she’s a bit of a loner and is fine in her own company. For months there are strange disappearances and deaths in national forests, like a lot of them. Then once winter hit they stopped, so when spring rolled back around she decides to go take some photos on a hike. While doing this she runs into a man who is running the same trail. Once she heads back to her vehicle to leave he is also leaving, but his car won’t start so she gives him a jump. They end up exchanging numbers and go on their way. Not long after she decides to go camping near this little country store she told him about on a mountain that serves the best milkshakes, but when she shows up and the store is closed she decides to send him a picture of this country store she told him about and then head to camp, only a few miles up the mountain her car just shuts down then she goes to call for help and her phone that she was just using won’t even turn on. She finds herself stuck hoping for someone to drive by and help. Little does she know the entire world as she knows it is about to change.
The main character’s growth in this book is insane, I could gush about this book for hours. It was so much more than I anticipated when I picked it up. The range of emotions I felt was huge. You really connect with the characters and become so invested, it’s hard to put down. And when I did put it down it’s all I could think about.
This was an absolutely wild ride, and I think it just opened up a whole new realm of reading for me. I couldn’t put this book down, it is so incredible. The twists and turns and the way it all comes together is a masterpiece. I hope this book finds its people, because it deserves all the hype and I cannot wait for the next book to come out!
